Space saving furniture

Space is a constraint that is beginning to hit us these days. With an ever rising population, the demand for space is only bound to increase with time. In this post we feature some intelligent space saving furniture that would be ideal for small space living.
What would you say if we told you all the furniture you see in the image below…
came from this small box?
You won’t believe it? Watch the video below. (Our email subscribers please check the following link to view it: http://www.home-designing.com/2008/10/space-saving-furniture )
What you were seeing is Casulo by Marcel Krings & Sebastian Mühlhäuser. The 31″x47″ (that’s 80 cm x 120 cm) box can carry the furniture of an entire room and it can be assembled in under 10 minutes with no external tools and zero wastage (even the external cover of the box is used). Our rooms maybe getting smaller but definitely not our minds!
Here is another similar concept by kenchikukagu but one that gives more emphasis to the kitchen.
Termed as ‘Architectural Furniture’, this enables the kitchen to be folded away when not in use.
Video here…
We are pretty much sure that Bonbon Trading has been inspired by the Transformers movie in making this outstanding piece of furniture. Sofa for the living room doubles up as a bunkbed! How cool is this?
Too lazy after that late night movie you watched on the TV? How about napping on the Sofa after you convert it to a bed? More sofa bed transformations…
We love furniture that can just be folded up when not in use…
Or those that become new type of furniture when folded…
And space saving furniture always needn’t be folded up to save space. Mebel furniture series by designer Daniel Milchtein Peltsverger is a case in point. These ergonomically designed stackable chairs made of molded plastic are ideal for hotel and office lobbies.
We have looked at space saving for the living, kitchen and the bedroom but aren’t we missing one place? Yep, you guessed it – The Bathroom.

by BHG
The sink in a drawer is a cool idea IF(and that is a BIG if) you have space to play with in the room adjacent to the bathroom.
Here is another more radical way to conserve space in the bathroom, infact it is more like a vertical micro bathroom.
Paul Hernon of Design Ltd calls it the Vertebrae. The Vertebrae packs a toilet, sink, two shower modules (one for children), storage space for shower, bath, shaving, and cosmetic products right along the column. Each component is a swingable module that can be used when needed. [Via]
Here is another interesting post on utilizing the space. (under the stairs) Space saving under the stairs
Or perhaps, space is not a constraint for you. How about a look at some beautiful modern classic chairs?

Inspirational Kitchen Designs From Alno

Alno‘s kitchens characteristically reflect the ‘german efficiency’ while being stylish in their design. One of their interesting features is the way they sometimes use textures on the kitchen wall.

Here is Alno’s design philosophy:
Modern kitchen design is all about using creative, individual and unusual design alternatives in order to create the most efficient use of space. There are various different kitchen shapes which, depending on the size and layout of the room, embrace the principles of the so-called work triangle as a practical arrangement of sink, fridge and oven and represent extremely sensible and practical solutions.
single line kitchen
The single-line kitchen is suitable for rooms with only one partition wall. Set-forward work areas and deeper base units can easily create more work and storage space.
two line kitchen
The two-line kitchen makes the best use of the available space. A distance of at least 1.2 metres between the two kitchen lines allows unrestricted access to the base units.
l shaped kitchen
The L-shaped kitchen can be used in a variety of ways. In large rooms there is even space for a dining table. Carousel fittings for corner units give access to storage space right into the furthest corner.
u shaped kitchen
The U-shaped kitchen is reliable and practical. It is ideal for both large and small rooms and provides maximum work surface and storage.
island-kitchen
The island kitchen is ideal for large, as well as open-plan rooms. Here the island unit constitutes a separate work surface, but still makes the kitchen feel wide and spacious.

Space Saving Tiny Apartment, New York

This tiny but highly sophisticated studio apartment in the East Village of NYC has made us very proud, thanks to JPDA. Not only was it built as a super efficient multi-functional unit but with the use of detailed mill work, the storage capacity was very cleverly executed and resulted in a super stylish studio with a decent amount of floor space. Shouldn’t all NYC dwellers aim to live like this? You decide…

A schematic rendering demonstrates a realistic plan for this tiny apartment.

Although we’re not too sure how realistic that cubbyhole at the crown of the loft is in a NYC apartment building, the rest of the space makes perfect sense.

This tiny living/work space is beautifully masked with natural light and looks so inviting!

This mezzanine bedroom is constructed with beautiful teak wood that houses hidden storage compartments…
What great use of typically neglected storage space….

Well lit and highly efficient modern kitchen has beautiful appliances and plenty of counter space. Who’d have thought!

Looks comfortable enough to entertain a handful of guests

Here we have a built-in office which serves to camouflage the workstation and appear invisible in the living room.

An intimate cozy space for maximum privacy and relaxation…

This modern bath looks monstrous thanks to the clever use of all that mirror, but all that matters is that there is enough room to take a fabulous shower!

Observe before you a full-height shower with minimal hardware to compliment the modern apartment scheme.

After exploiting every nook in this home and discovering a wealth of storage space (which is totally key) we got to thinking- Is this apartment really all that tiny?
